Artists Beware of these Red Flags in Contracts

I think this is important enough to post to my blog.

  1. I signed a contract on one piece of art for an online auction that gave them exclusive rights for that one piece for a year. Although it wasn't too long, it did prevent me from showing it anywhere else during that time even though the physical piece was sitting in a closet.

  2. Great information Bonnie. I bet at the time you didn't think one year was very long.

  3. Thanks Bonnie, something to think about! Especially now as I attempt to get some of my first gallery representation.

  4. I seriously doubt this will ever be an issue for me but just in case, it sure is. Thanks Bonnie.

  5. So true, I entered a contest online. I understood they would only sell prints if I won and I would receive commission on sales. This was the contract I signed (or so I thought). Turns out, I only receive commission if I win; otherwise, they sell prints and retain all monies. To fight these things takes lawyer fees and diligence. Thank you for this article Bonnie.
