The painting won't fit the oven.

I bit more done
24h x 20w

The one disadvantage of painting this size is that the canvas doesn't fit in the oven.  Go ahead..., laugh.  With heat set oils, it's really easy to pop the painting in the oven and dry the whole painting... not so when it doesn't fit.  On this painting I have to dry each section with the heat gun.  This is handy when I've painted a small area and I want it dried right away so I can glaze over it, BUT not so handy when I've painted all over the canvas.  That's when I take a break.  I go to my favourite chair put my feet up and use the dryer.  Did I say it was a disadvantage?   Hmmmm... maybe I was wrong.   I hope you have a chance to sit back and put your feet up today too.

  1. Of course your blog title caught my interest! LOL I was reminded of a book I read on a man named Van Meegeren who forged Vandermeer paintings. His process for getting the crackelature (was that the right word? spelling looks off...) included using the oven and some properties of bakelite. Anyway, this is looking amazing!

  2. With a title like THAT, I couldn't help reading this post first this morning! Now that I've read it I guess it makes sense to put your work in the oven to dry it quickly. Clever idea! It's a beautiful composition. What will you do with the finished piece? Is it a commission?

  3. Hi Bonnie,
I've never, ever heard of drying an oil painting in the oven or using a heat gun before. You said these are "heat set" oil paints? That's different. He is a cute one.

  4. Thanks everyone! Heat set oils suit me since I paint in little spurts. I don't have to worry about my brushes drying because heat set oils never do, unless they are heated. This painting is one a friend put on facebook. I asked if I could paint it. I hope to have it to put in one of two shows I have will be in in September.

  6. Oh my, Oh my, I would choose a hair dryer or the sun!!!! But not having spoiled brushes must be a great advantage of your paints.
